Born under a mistral sign, The Perini Navi Cup 2004 came to a conclusion in Porto Rotondo Sunday, July 11th, despite gusts blowing over 30 knots! Even high winds could not stop the mega sailers from Perini Navi and their teams protected by "Defender" jackets by Loro Piana, from challenging one-another in a regatta along ca. 32 miles of Sardinian coast. The 14 boats on hand at the starting line, at 11.30 am, set out to challenge each other as the canon shot rang out across the water. With a spectacular show of criss crossing through the waters from Porto Rotondo to Cala di Volpe, the race was neck and neck from the start between Principessa Vaivia, Paz and Burrasca followed closely by Crelia, Perseus, Andromeda La Dea and Santa Maria. At destination, after approximately 4 hours of navigation at speeds of up to14 knots and (with keeling that is rarely seen outside of the America's ‘Cup,) it was the 40m Principessa Vaivia who took first place in the overall classification over Paz and Burrasca. In order to make up for the regatta that was cancelled the previouse day due to weather-safty issues, a two tiered classification was put in place including Group A: boats that are shorter in length than 46 meters and Group B: simply, those boats over 46 meters long. Group A was domintated by Pricipessa Vaivia ahead of Paz and Lady Lauren while Group B was lead by Burrasca followed by Corelia and Perseus. In the breathtaking surroundings of the hotel Cala di Volpe, a special ceremony awaited to award not only the regatta of the day but also the match race held the previous day aboard a special collection of Bénéteau 25's. The match race was won by the team of Andromeda La Dea, captained by David Hutchinson with the help of tactician Harold Cudmore. At the gala award ceremony, a model race was also run in the swimming pool with America's Cupper models which saw the team from Heritage beat Andromeda La Dea and Perseus. Stage and television celebrity Clarissa Burt was assisted by representatives of the sponsors Credit Suisse, Bulgari, Loro Piana and Bentley Roma, in crowning Principessa Vaivia as the over-all winner of the Perini Navi Cup 2004. In addition to the actual cup the winners took home a Bulgari Diagono Scuba watch as the 1st prize. Last but certainly not least enjoyed by all, was the award for the Ferrari Spumante "best cocktail contest", that went to the chef of the Perini known as Atmosphere.
